1. Pickleball
Pickleball has exploded in recent years as a fun sport to play with a low barrier of entry. You don’t have to be an expert to get enjoyment and exercise out of pickleball.
With pickleball courts cropping up around the state, you too can join in the craze! With simple rules and a rabid following, pickleball can be your next new sport.
Just remember to stay out of the kitchen!
2. Volleyball
Volleyball courts are scattered around Wisconsin like stars, from the big cities to rural neighborhoods. We’ve seen our share of greats, like the Carlini sisters, Kelly Sheffield, and all of the legends from the Wisconsin Badgers volleyball team.
Even the high schools get in on the fun, with volleyball being one of the most significant sports in Wisconsin. Because it can be played indoors or outdoors, volleyball fans can practice and play all year long.
3. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey thrives in the Midwest due to our cold temperatures and many bodies of water. In fact, we’re pretty sure Midwesterners are born with ice skates on their feet.
Wisconsin has produced some amazing hockey players, like Phil Kessel and Joe Pavelski. Even the original creator of the Green Bay Packers, Earl “Curly” Lambeau, played for the Green Bay Bobcats.
The Milwaukee Admirals have been around since the 1970s, skating their way through the United States Hockey League, the International Hockey League, and the American Hockey League.
Ice hockey rinks, whether indoor or outdoor, can be found everywhere in Wisconsin. So lace up and get out there!
4. Golf
The state of Wisconsin boasts over 500 golf courses. Many of these courses are picturesque because of Wisconsin's natural beauty and countryside.
We have a rich golfing history, which includes hosting the American Family Insurance Championship. Some of the most famous golfers to come from Wisconsin include Steve Stricker, Jerry Keller, Andy North, and Skip Kendall, to name a few.
So whether you’re out swinging on one of the many golf courses or practicing your short game on your backyard putting green, just know that by playing golf, you are supporting the great history of the game.
5. Basketball
Basketball is the second most popular sport in Wisconsin, barging into the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks have won two championships in the NBA, and they never let their passion die.
But the professionals aren’t the only ones dominating the court. The University of Wisconsin Badgers are right there in the Big Ten. Wisconsin has also produced several famous basketball players, including Devin Harris, Michael Finley, and Frank Kaminsky.
You can start cementing your basketball legacy by designing and building your own basketball court and practicing your shot all year long!
Imagine the screams of the fans cheering you on as you make the game-winning 3-point shot.
6. Football
We can’t have a list of popular sports in Wisconsin without including the Green Bay Packers!!!
Playing under the stadium lights of Lambeau Field, whether rain, snow, or shine, the Packers have led Wisconsin to four Super Bowls, though they have won the most championships of all the other teams in the NFL.
Whether you’re talking about Brett Favre, Bart Starr, or Aaron Rodgers, there’s no question that Wisconsin lives and breathes football.
7. Tennis
Tennis is a great sport to play that requires precision and skill. With many tennis courts in Wisconsin, it won’t be hard to find a place to play. In fact, the University of Wisconsin has hosted tennis tournaments for college athletes.
Even if you’re not a professional, tennis still ranks highly as a casual and hobby sport. While it requires a lot of practice, you can still get a great workout from playing tennis regularly.
8. Bocce Ball
Bocce ball holds a place among the top sports in the world. It has simple rules that are easy to pick up but take some time to master. Hobbyists can have a great time hosting bocce ball tournaments for fun.
Bocce ball has been played as early as 264 B.C. in Rome. Some stone balls have been found dating back to 9,000 B.C., though no one knows how old bocce ball really is. In the United States, around 25 million people play this awesome sport.
