Improve Your Volleyball Game With These Five Tips
At C&C Courts, we pride ourselves on being one of the most trusted athletic court design brands for all sports – especially volleyball. Part of the reason we make such great volleyball courts is that we know the game of volleyball through and through.
We know exactly what surface materials and traits it takes to make a high-quality volleyball court, whether it’s an indoor gymnasium, a backyard volleyball surface, or a commercial volleyball court.
Through years of research and practice, we’ve put together these tips for improving your volleyball game. While we do what we can to help you play your best game, it’s mainly up to you to practice the skills that will improve your game and ability to use the court to your advantage.
Looking to conquer your competition? Here are five essential tips to improve your and your team’s volleyball skills.
1. Two-Point Start Speed Drills
Two major skills for volleyball are being quick on your feet and fast reactions. Most movement happens within a five-step pattern, making first-step speed mechanics critical to master. This drill will help you maximize your movement on the court.
To perform this drill, set up cones or something similar ten yards apart. Perform one rep at half speed, one rep at three-quarters speed, and five reps at full speed. Work your way up to ten full-speed reps.
Make sure you walk back to the starting line to recover between each rep.
2. Practice Wall Drills
The goal of this drill is to work your way up to a jog and, eventually, a sprint. For this drill, you will perform four sets at 30 seconds per drill with a 60-second rest between.
Follow this guide to perform the wall drill:
-
Stand about three feet away from a wall.
-
Extend your arms and lean to a 45-degree angle. Place your hands on the wall.
-
Engage your core and hold a straight line from your neck to your ankles.
-
Keep your feet hip-width apart, toes straight, and your heels slightly off the ground.
-
While keeping your back flat and your foot in a dorsiflexed position, pull your right knee forward 90 degrees and hold briefly.
-
Drive your right leg back to its starting position.
-
Repeat with the opposite leg.
3. Use Fast Feet Drills
Practice the fast feet drill to improve your foot movement and passing skills. You’ll need at least three players, several volleyballs, a half-court, and a coach.
The three players will rotate in a small circle in the left front, passing a ball tossed by the coach, who is standing in the middle of the court. After every pass, the passer moves several steps to the right and back into the circle. You’ll have to move quickly to return to the circle to receive the next pass.
Focus on controlled, low passing and keeping your feet moving quickly.
4. Serving Drills to Improve Accuracy
The best way to improve your accuracy when serving the ball is to perform serving drills. There are several types of serving drills to try, all with the intention of upping your game.
Start with Target Serving. This means you set up different positions on the opposite side of the court, like corners and lines, and practice hitting those locations. Work on this drill until you can hit each location consistently.
Next, try Pressure Serving. This works well with teammates or other players. Create a situation where players serve under pressure while mimicking an in-game scenario.
Third, play the Ace and Error game. You can take turns serving the ball, accumulating points for every ace, and losing points for errors. This helps to encourage strategic serving. Turning it into a game or competition can help improve focus and drive.
5. Build a Home Volleyball Court or Upgrade Your Commercial Surface
The best way to improve your volleyball game is to practice. C&C Courts is passionate about sports, which is why we offer both residential and commercial volleyball court builds.
Home Volleyball Court
What better way to get maximum practice time than playing on a home volleyball court? With advanced athletic flooring technologies and multi-sport capabilities, your home volleyball court can work as hard as you.
Practicing when you can’t get into a public court will help you improve your skills faster, plus you can bring your teammates over for additional help and improvement. And when you need a break from volleyball, you can play tennis, pickleball, or basketball on your multi-sport athletic court.
Commercial Volleyball Courts
If you are a coach, league coordinator, or gym owner, you know the benefits and appeal of indoor and outdoor courts. Building a commercial volleyball court can help bring in student athletes and casual players who want to exercise by playing team sports.
If you want to get more use out of your courts, however, you can always opt for multi-sport athletic courts. These courts can host various games, including pickleball, basketball, tennis, etc. This way, you can turn your gym or practice facility into a rotating competition location by arranging tournaments for different sports. Plus, you don’t want to miss out on the wave of pickleball love.
