7 Tips to Set Up a Bocce Ball Tournament

A fun and easy-to-learn summer game is bocce ball. If you’ve never played bocce ball, it’s a game where a small ball called the pallino is thrown or rolled on a flat surface.

Players or teams take turns tossing bocce balls to get as close to the pallino as possible. The player or team with a bocce ball closest to the pallino scores points. The pallino is thrown again, and the process repeats.

As you can see, absolute beginners and more experienced players can enjoy a summer tournament of bocce ball. Since it’s so easy to learn, it won’t be hard rounding up your friends and family to join in the fun. Setting up a bocce ball tournament requires planning and organization. Here are seven tips for setting up the ultimate bocce ball tournament!

1. Determine the Format

The first thing you should do when planning a bocce ball tournament is to decide on the tournament format. This can be single elimination, double elimination, or round robin. Also, consider the number of players, available time, and resources.

2. Establish the Rules

Make sure to define the rules of the tournament. Include rules for scoring, player eligibility, time limits, and any other specific regulations for the tournament. Communicate these rules to the players so everyone knows and plays to the rules.

3. Select a Venue

The next thing to do is find a venue. Typically, a bocce ball court is 13 feet wide and 91 feet long. After you have determined the number of players, you can determine where to hold your tournament.

The most obvious is holding the tournament at your backyard bocce ball court. It is entirely possible to have the perfect bocce ball court built in your backyard. With a bocce ball court in your backyard, you can plan many tournaments and host your own parties with friends and family.

You also won’t have to worry about grabbing public courts and hoping they’re available.

Alternatively, you can use a neighborhood bocce ball court or a community bocce ball court. Consider talking to your leaders about building a neighborhood bocce ball court if you have any pull in your HOA or neighborhood.

4. Gather Equipment

Make sure you have enough bocce ball sets to accommodate the number of players. You will also need a pallino for each game. A few other things to have on hand include a tape measure and scoreboards.

5. Create a Schedule or Tournament Bracket

Create the brackets or a schedule for the tournament so everyone knows where to be and when. Make sure to include breaks or rest periods every once in a while.

6. Ensure Safety and Fair Play

Prioritize safety by ensuring the playing area is free from hazards and that players are aware of any potential risks. Emphasize fair play and sportsmanship, and have a process in place to address disputes or rule violations.

7. Post-Tournament Fun

And, of course, make sure to include some fun activities for after the tournament. This could include food, beverages, and a trophy ceremony. This helps create a sense of camaraderie among the players and helps convince them to play again!
